A Metroid Movie
That's right. There will be a movie on the Metroid series.  The rights have been thrown around over the last couple of years, and the new studioes seem like the kind of people that will take this job and run with it.  Or we'll hope so, at least.

John Woo Bringing Metroid to the Big Screen

John Woo has optioned Nintendo's best-selling video game franchise Metroid for the big screen, says The Hollywood Reporter. Woo will produce the sci-fi movie and has the option to direct. Terence Chang and Brad Foxhoven will share production responsibilities. Lion Rock Productions' Suzanne Zizzi also is attached to the project.

The plan is to release the first film before 2006. The movie will center on
the origins of the game's female protagonist, sexy bounty hunter Samus Aran, and relate her adventures battling the insidious life-sucking Metroids and their controlling force, Mother Brain.

"We have to assume the mainstream audience is unfamiliar with the property," Foxhoven said. "As for the rest of the film, we will stay true to the game and have Samus battling the Metroids and Mother Brain in a fight for control of the galaxy."

NEW NEWS ON THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!

I almost thought the idea for a Metroid Movie was just a fabled tale, after a year of nothing from the first producers (the same ones who made American Pie) did not make any progress on it.  Their rights ran out, and now, on April 4, 2004, there is news that a new producer has gained the rights to the movie.  The new director is Joh Woo, and theproducer is Brad Foxhoven.  From GameSpot:

"The movie rights for the Metroid series were originally optioned by producers Warren Zide and Craig Perry in January last year, but were allowed to expire. Woo's game studio, Tiger Hill Games, stepped in and optioned the rights from Nintendo when they became available again. Could this be what we, as Metroid fans, have been waiting for?  If not, then there is the fact that the Metroid Movie would never be made.  But no matter what, I will have the most recent news on it right here at Yes' Metroid Prime Site.  God's speed, Tiger Hill.
